The son of a gold-mining magnate and an opera singer, he began his working life as an insurance clerk and newspaper reporter. After returning from WWI service with the rank of major, he made his stage debut in 1918. By 1920 he was appearing on the London stage and in British silent films. His screen career reached a high point in Hollywood (1924-34), where he became established as a reliable leading man, usually in roles epitomizing stiff-upper-lipped suavity and distinction. His clipped accent enhanced his screen presence after the advent of sound. Among his strongest portrayals were the lead roles in Josef Von Sternberg UNDERWORLD (1927) and EL EXPRESO DE SHANGAI (1932). In 1935 he returned to Britain, where he also appeared in films, the last of which, ON APPROVAL (1943), he also produced and directed. He subsequently appeared occasionally on the stage and British TV, returning to the big screen only once in THE LIST OF ADRIAN MESSENGER (1963).
