Will Geer (1902 - 1978) Actor Born: March 9, 1902, Frankfort, IN Died: 1978 The son of a postal worker and a teacher, he participated in high school dramatics and pursued the same interest while studying at the University of Chicago and at Columbia. He joined Eva Le Gallienne's National Repertory Company and made his Broadway debut in The Merry Wives of Windsor (1928). He appeared in numerous stage productions and an occasional film in the 30s and 40s before settling on a Hollywood career as a character actor in 1948. Three years later, however, he was blacklisted for refusing to cooperate with the House Un-American Activities Committee and returned to the stage, appearing both off and on Broadway. It wasn't until 1962 that he returned to the screen, thanks to Otto Preminger, the first Hollywood director to defy the blacklist. From then Geer played character roles, often abrasive, sometimes sinister, in many Hollywood productions, as well as on TV, notably in the long-running Los Waltons. His daughter, Ellen Geer, has played leads and supporting roles in several films of the 60s and 70s, as well as on TV.
