Craven's first film role was as 'Hardware' in the broad comedy MEATBALLS (1979), starring Bill Murray. He worked his way through small supporting parts in such films as the horror outing CUMPLEAÑOS SANGRIENTO (1981) and the Canadian comedy HOG WILD. For the next few years, Craven concentrated on stage work and appeared in his first TV-movie, THE INTRUDER WITHIN (ABC, 1981). He also appeared as a fellow patient of the cancer-stricken hero in the biopic THE TERRY FOX STORY (HBO, 1983). Craven's TV work picked up and he appeared in a handful of TV-movies over the next few years: the comedies JUST MARRIED (ABC, 1985), with Paul Reiser, HEARTS OF STEEL (ABC, 1986), as a steelworker turned restauranteur and CLASSIFIED LOVE (CBS, 1986). He also co-starred in two short-lived comedy series, Tough Cookies (CBS, 1986), starring Robby Benson and Harry (ABC, 1987), with Alan Arkin. In 1985, Craven made a return to films with the Canadian comedy THAT'S MY BABY in his first big budget film, Barry Levinson comedy TIN MEN (1987), Craven landed his first starring role as an advertising agency bookkeeper in the Canadian-made gangster comedy PALAIS ROYALE (1988). It was back to minor roles as Jamie Lee Curtis suitor in BLUE STEEL (1990), a mental patient in CHATTAHOOCHEE (1990) and a drug producer in ALUCINACIONES DEL PASADO (1990). Craven won acclaim for his co-starring turn as a married college professor in the mountain-climbing adventure K-2 (1992). He essayed a military man in the Tom Cruise/Jack Nicholson vehicle CUESTION DE HONOR (1992) and was one of a group of campers holding a reunion in UN VERANO PARA RECORDAR (1993). After treading water in DOUBLE CROSS ( 1994) and BULLETPROOF HEART (1994), Craven had third billing (after Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman) as a communications officer in the seagoing thriller MAREA ROJA (1995), and supported Demi Moore and Alec Baldwin in LA JURADO (1996). Craven also returned to TV in 1995, playing the title character's assassin in KINGFISH: A STORY OF HUEY P. LONG (TNT, 1995) and a small-towner in the acclaimed busted pilot Kansas (ABC, 1995). In 1996, Craven appeared in the HBO movie FINAL CUT, and returned to series TV as a policeman in the DreamWorks SKG-produced drama High Incident (ABC, 1996-) opposite David Keith.
