Argo has worked steadily in features and TV, appearing in six Martin Scorsese features as well as working with such diverse auteurs as Woody Allen and Abel Ferrara. After making his debut in the Roger Corman-produced/Martin Scorsese-directed BOXCAR BERTHA (1972), as a snarling railroad detective, Argo frequently found himself playing rough and tumble urban types. Other Scorsese roles include one of the young hoods that ran with Harvey Keitel and Robert De Niro down New York's CALLES SALVAJES (1973), the crowbar-wielding deli owner in TAXI DRIVER (1976), Apostle Peter in the controversial LA ULTIMA TENTACION DE CRISTO (1988), and made cameo appearances in DESPUES DE HORA (1985) and the Life Lessons episode of NEW YORK STORIES (1989). He made brief appearances in such notable films as director-writer Martin Brest's impressive debut HOT TOMORROWS (1977), Bette Midler's feature debut THE ROSE (1979), and Susan Seidelman's BUSCANDO A SUSAN (1985). He played veteran police detectives for Woody Allen's CRÍMENES Y PECADOS (1989), and Abel Ferrara's EL REY DE NUEVA YORK (1990) y UN MALDITO POLICIA (1992). In Nancy Savoca's richly rendered portrait of an Italian-American family HOUSEHOLD SAINTS (1993) he played Tracey Ullman's widowed father. Argo has shown up intermittently on the small screen, mostly in TV movies (SMILE JENNY, YOU'RE DEAD, 1974), his debut; the HBO action adventurer FLORIDA STRAITS (1986), and was a regular on the short-lived drama series DREAM STREET (1989) which focused on the denizens of an inner-city neighborhood.
