USA (1962 -). Actor norteamericano nacido el 26 de octubre de 1962 en Waterbury, CT. The son of a New York bar owner, McDermott started as a stage actor and was signed by an agent who spotted him on Broadway in Biloxi Blues (1985). The handsome, dark-haired, blue-eyed actor played a sergeant in the Vietnam drama LA COLINA (1987), then marked time in the small noir comedies THE BLUE IGUANA (1988) and TWISTER (1988), taking time off to appear in a stage production of Golden Boy directed by Joanne Woodward. He finally garnered some attention for his portrayal of Julia Roberts' husband (and off-screen boyfriend) in the Southern weepy, FLORES DE ACERO (1989). But it was back to B pictures for awhile: McDermott appeared in such forgettable fare as the thrillers HARDWARE (1990), WHERE SLEEPING DOGS LIE (1991), with fellow up-and-comer Sharon Stone, and the romantic comedy JERSEY GIRL, which was sold to Fox TV just before its scheduled 1992 release. After losing a part in JURASSIC PARK, he was signed to play Clint Eastwood's doomed partner in the exceptional thriller EN LA LINEA DE FUEGO (1993). True to form, three flops followed: THE COWBOY WAY and an ill-advised remake of MILAGRO EN LA CALLE 34 (1994) (both 1994), and the too-hip DESTINY TURNS ON THE RADIO (1995). After having the good sense to turn down a role in SHOWGIRLS, McDermott began playing the romantic roles his looks cut him out for; the actor romanced Holly Hunter in Jodie Foster's FERIADOS EN FAMILIA (1995), and was torn between Sarah Jessica Parker and Jeanne Tripplehorn in TIL THERE WAS YOU (1996). McDermott made his TV debut with a small role in the miniseries THE NEON EMPIRE (Showtime, 1989). His three succeeding TV-movies failed to make much of a splash: the western INTO THE BADLANDS (USA, 1991), the thrillers THE FEAR INSIDE (Showtime, 1992) and THIS'LL KILL YA (HBO, 1992). In 1996, he was signed for his first series, David E. Kelley's law drama The Practice (ABC). McDermott returned to the stage in 1995 with a very Off-Broadway production of Floating Rhoda and the Glue Man, written by his stepmother, Eve Ensler.
