George Harrison (1943 - ) Musician, composer, producer, actor Born: February 25, 1943, Liverpool, England Education: Dovedale Primary School; Liverpool Institute The slim, darkly handsome and shy member of The Beatles, George Harrison is also the youngest (only 14 when he joined the group in 1957 and 19 when they rocketed to stardom in 1962). Like the rest of the Fab Four, he was born in Liverpool. Harrison formed his own group, The Rebels, in 1956, and the following year, joined John Lennon and Paul McCartney in The Quarry Men. Though overshadowed by Lennon and McCartney, he made important contributions to the group (re-named The Beatles in 1962) as a guitarist and singer, and eventually songwriter and sitar player. By 1963, with the addition of Ringo Starr, the band was complete and their squeaky-clean image was overseen by promoter Brian Epstein. Worldwide fame followed, and Harrison contributed such songs as I Need You, Taxman, Piggies, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Here Comes the Sun y Something to the group's hit list. For better or worse, he also led them into Indian music and mysticism via his involvement with musician Ravi Shankar and religious leader Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in the mid-1960s. (Harrison, unlike the other Beatles, remained true to this conversion). Harrison recorded solo as early as the Wonderwall Music (1968), and was the first ex-Beatle to have a Number 1 hit, My Sweet Lord (1970). In 1971, he organized a charity concert for Bangladesh, which also developed into a documentary film and a Grammy-winning album (the money did not actually reach Bangladesh until 1981, however). A disappointing 1974 tour forced Harrison into semi-retirement, but he formed Dark Horse Records in 1974 and HandMade Films in 1978. The latter produced such films as THE LIFE OF BRIAN, TIME BANDITS and WITHNAIL & I. Harrison joined the group The Traveling Wilburys in 1988. Although he has had some touring and recording success in the 1990s, HandMade Films was sold at a loss in 1994 and Harrison's financial troubles were reportedly the main reason the very private ex-Beatle agreed to participate in THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY (ABC, 1995).
