A hopeful concert pianist, Madeleine Stowe was spotted by an agent at USC's theater department and the non-actress fast-talked her way onto such TV shows as Baretta and the TV movies THE DEERSLAYER (NBC, 1978), THE NATIVITY (as Mary, ABC, 1978), BEAULAH LAND (NBC, 1980) and THE GANGSTER CHRONICLES (NBC, 1981). By this time, she was concentrating on film work, so her TV output slowed: she was a doctor in the thriller AMAZONS (ABC, 1984) and had a small role in BLOOD & ORCHIDS (CBS, 1986). Stowe filmed the low-budget actioner TROPICAL SNOW in 1986, but it went unreleased until 1989. So her nominal feature debut was as the object of surveillance in DOS POLICIAS AL ACECHO (1987), co-starring Richard Dreyfuss and Emilio Estevez. She was the lust object of Mark Harmon in EL ULTIMO SOLTERO (1989) and Kevin Costner in REVANCHA (1990), and a murder victim's wife in BARRIO CHINO II (1990), then gave a tour-de-force performance in the political film CLOSET LAND (1991), opposite Alan Rickman. Stowe was back to being menaced by Ray Liotta in the popular thriller OBSESION FATAL (1992), before getting her big break. The actress found her widest audience to date as the independent, free-thinking woman who falls for frontiersman Daniel Day-Lewis in EL ULTIMO DE LOS MOHICANOS (1992). Stowe was virtually wasted in the sequel ANOTHER DOS POLICIAS AL ACECHO (1987), but she stood out in Robert Altman's CIUDAD DE ANGELES (1993) (also 1993) as Tim Robbins' long-suffering wife. In the mildly interesting TESTIGO (1994), she portrayed a blind violinist and murder witness who gets her sight back, while in CHINA MOON (1994), she was a romantic survivor of domestic abuse. In the same year, Stowe also starred in the critically-panned all-girl Western, PERSEGUIDAS (1994). A hit came with Terry Gilliam's sci-fi thriller 12 MONOS (1995), but Stowe's role as a sympathetic psychiatrist was overshadowed by the showier performances of Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt.
