As Blaze Starr, Davidovich was the celebrated Louisiana stripper for whose love Paul Newman's Governor Earl Long risked everything. The film's commercial failure slowed down Davidovich's career as a mainstream Hollywood lead. Several parts in offbeat films followed—a supporting role (she replaced an ailing Elizabeth Perkins) in the atypical romantic comedy, OBJETO DE SEDUCCIÓN (1991) and a lead opposite Tom Hulce in the Soviet-set drama EL CIRCULO DEL PODER (1988) about Stalin's projectionist. She returned to Hollywood as the adulterous wife of a possibly psychotic John Lithgow in Brian De Palma absurdist thriller RAISING CAIN (1992). That same year, Davidovich appeared in the unsuccessful Steve Martin vehicle MILAGRO DE FE (1992). Moving increasingly into popular fare, she was also the hooker girlfriend of cop Wesley Snipes in the tepid crime drama BOILING POINT (1993) and the other woman in Richard Gere and Sharon Stone marriage in ENTRE DOS AMORES (1994).
