Carmen Miranda (1909 - 1955) Singer, dancer, actress Born As: Maria do Carmo Miranda da Cunha Born: February 9, 1909, Marco de Canavezes, near Lisbon, Portugal Died: 1955 Dynamic, flamboyant, temperamental entertainer who enlivened Hollywood films of the 40s with her staccato singing and frantic dancing. As a child she moved with her parents to Rio de Janeiro, where her father ran a prosperous wholesale fruit business and where she was convent-educated. She began singing on local radio and before long became a popular recording star. She appeared in several Brazilian films before being imported to Broadway by the Shuberts in 1939. Following her success in the musical Streets of Paris and a now-legendary engagement at the Waldorf-Astoria, she was signed by Fox on a film contract. Billed as the Brazilian Bombshell, she added exotic spice to more than a dozen Hollywood musical films, typically performing in extravagant costumes and high headgear, usually adorned by an assortment of tropical fruit. She died suddenly of a heart attack, at 46, shortly after a demanding number on a segment of the Jimmy Durante TV show. Her body was flown to Brazil, where her death was cause for national mourning.
