An attractive lead, Shue earned praise as the determined child-watcher in 1987's UNA NOCHE POR LA CIUDAD (1987) before playing Tom Cruise's love interest in COCTAIL (1988). She also took over the role of Marty McFly's marooned girlfriend, Jennifer, in the second and third installments of the BACK TO THE FUTURE series. She followed up with a bright bit as the aspiring actress-niece of a soap opera star in SOAPDISH (1991) and as the concerned girlfriend of a man who must help four spirits realize their dreams in EL AMOR ES ETERNO (1993). Leaving behind her wholesome image, Shue delivered a complex, blistering dramatic performance as Sera, an abused prostitute who becomes involved with a dissolute suicidal screenwriter (Nicolas Cage) in Mike Figgis's critically acclaimed ADIOS A LAS VEGAS (1995) por la que fue nominada al Oscar como Mejor Actriz.
