Lugar y fecha de nacimiento. John Lennon (1940 - 1980) Musician Also: Composer, actor, writer Born As: John Winston Lennon Born: October 9, 1940, Liverpool, England Died: December 8, 1980, New York, NY Education: Dovedale Primary School; Quarry Bank High School; Liverpool College of Art This hell-raising, political, artsy member of The Beatles, the influential British rock group (1962-70), was raised by his aunt Mimi in Liverpool. Lennon was a prankster and trouble-maker from childhood. He discovered music in the mid-1950s, forming several groups (The Quarry Men, The Silver Beatles) before teaming up with Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and—in 1962—Ringo Starr as The Beatles. Teddies. That—and the music written by Lennon and McCartney—helped propel the band to super-stardom by 1963. In addition to their countless hit singles and albums, the lads starred in two films directed by Richard Lester, the amusing faux-documentary A HARD DAY'S NIGHT (1964) and the JAMES BOND spoof HELP! (1965). They also lent their voices to the animated feature YELLOW SUBMARINE (1968) and appeared in the TV-movie MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR (BBC, 1967). On his own, Lennon acted in the Richard Lester comedy HOW I WON THE WAR (1967). By the mid-1960s, The Beatles—Lennon in particular—were increasingly involved in drugs, Far Eastern mysticism and musical experimentation. While this resulted in often superbly innovative music, John's romance with conceptual artist and musician Yoko Ono alienated both fans and fellow Beatles (Lennon and Ono married in 1969). Lennon's musical accomplishments were sometimes overshadowed by his controversial anti-war protests (including a 1969 Bed-In for Peace) and pronouncements (in 1966 he commented that The Beatles were more popular than Jesus, causing no end of trouble). In 1968, he and Ono wrote and starred in a play, In His Own Write, and held a conceptual art exhibit consisting of a white canvas and 365 balloons. After the break-up of The Beatles, Lennon formed The Plastic Ono Band with Yoko and others (she appeared onstage in a canvas bag). The Lennons moved to New York's Dakota apartments in 1973 where he recorded several hits (Imagine, 1972; Whatever Gets You Through the Night, 1974) and was nearly deported before retiring from public life to become a househusband in 1975. Lennon was enjoying a bit of a comeback in 1980 with the album Double Fantasy when he was shot to death outside his apartment by a deranged fan. See also The Beatles.
