Empezó su carrera profesional en The Glasgow Citizens Theatre, una compañía de teatro a la que perteneció durante muchos años. En Irlanda, trabajó para el Lyric Theatre Belfast, el Druid Theatre de Galway, en el Project y en el Abbey de Dublín, donde interpretó a Cuchulain en "The Yeats Cycle".
