Lugar y fecha de nacimiento. Colm Meaney (1953 - ) Actor Born: c.1953, Dublin, Ireland Education: Dublin Drama School; Abbey Theatre, Dublin, Ireland Burly, curly-haired Irish player, best known as Chief Engineer Miles O'Brien on the hit syndicated series Viaja a las Estrellas: Espacio Profundo Nueve. Meaney started at the renowned Abbey Theatre in Dublin before moving to London where he joined 784, a leftist theatre group. Meaney traveled to the US in 1982, settling in the Hell's Kitchen section of Manhattan, and jetted back-and-forth between the New York and London stages. After four years of continent-hopping, Meaney and his wife moved to Los Angeles, where he soon made his feature debut in an obscure sci-fi feature, OMEGA 7 (1986). This genre would prove to be Meaney's TV home for many years when he was cast as Engineer Miles O'Brien on Viaje a las Estrellas: La Siguiente Generación (1987-92), the hugely successful syndicated follow-up to a TV legend. Supporting roles in high-profile features quickly followed, including THE DEAD (1987), COME SEE THE PARADISE (1990) and EL ULTIMO DE LOS MOHICANOS (1992). January 1993 marked the premiere of a second Viaje a las Estrellas spin-off and a promotion for Meaney's character to Chief Engineer and major supporting player on Viaja a las Estrellas: Espacio Profundo Nueve. Hollywood has been good to the Irish actor but Ireland has provided more rewarding feature roles. Meaney shone in a supporting role as the Elvis-worshipping father in Alan Parker's THE COMMITMENTS (1991), which led to the lead in Stephen Frears' THE SNAPPER (1993). The second screen adaptation from novelist Roddy Doyle's Irish trilogy, The Snapper cast Meaney as Dessie, a working class father in Northern Dublin who slowly comes to accept his daughter's unexpected pregnancy. The role showcased a formidable talent only hinted at in Meaney's American work.
